Ian Savage is a member of the Law Society of Alberta and has defended cases in Alberta and Saskatchewan over the past 17 years. He has practised exclusively in the area of criminal defence law since 1992. He has particularly focused his practice on impaired driving law for more than ten years now, and successfully represents more people charged with impaired driving than perhaps any other criminal lawyer in southern Alberta. He presently practices in association with the criminal law firm of Savage Brebner. In the last two years, he has either won or obtained a successful plea bargain in more than 95% of his Trials. He was one of the three lead lawyers representing several thousand clients who challenged the Alberta Administrative Licence Suspension program in recent years, which challenge went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. He is a past Chair of the Criminal Law Section (South) of the Canadian Bar Association, Alberta Branch, and has instructed in the area of criminal law at the Alberta Law Society Bar Admission course for several years. He has lectured at the University of Calgary Law School concerning impaired driving and has assisted with the new recruit classes of the Calgary Police Service in preparing for impaired driving and other criminal cases for a number of years. He was an instructor at a recent provincial lawyers' conference on impaired driving and is frequently consulted by other criminal defence lawyers concerning impaired driving issues. He has appeared in all levels of court in Alberta and Saskatchewan including Traffic Court, Provincial Court (Criminal Division and Youth Division), the Court of Queen's Bench (including many jury trials), Court of Queen's Bench - Summary Conviction Appeals, as well as the Alberta and Saskatchewan Courts of Appeal. He has also successfully represented clients before other administrative boards such as the Driver Control Board and the Transportation Safety Board.
