Paul Joseph bought the original cafe on this site Schoonerville in 1952 renaming it El Patio. His son David runs the place today and it has a strong family vibe. Despite the name there's no patio--just a narrow room divided into two sections and decorated with pictures of famous patrons. The menu is strictly old-fashioned Tex-Mex. The El Patio No. 1 has queso to go with its guacamole beef taco cheese enchilada and tamale. This is like that place in your hometown that you loved growing up. They always super friendly and the owners are always there working. They go... read more

Barley Swine by Chef Bryce Gilmore is cleverly named for the chef's fondness of both pork and beer which will naturally be prominent fixtures on the menu. Gilmore the man behind the always imaginative Odd Duck Farm to Trailer has expanded into his first brick and mortar space in the heart of South Austin. Like Odd Duck Barley Swine's ever-changing menu features refined techniques juxtaposed with rustic ingredients sourced from local farms. Heavy on the suds the beer list features brews from the burgeoning brew-munity in Austin with beer pairings and special bottle service to give diners a way to... read more

Excellent cheap authentic tacos. The roadside shack is easy to pass up but if you do step inside you're treated to freshly made tortillas tender meats and flavorful sauces. The breakfast tacos are some of the best in town with eggs cooked in a ski. The aroma of smoky morita salsa and roasting meats from the open kitchen permeate the small dining room. Orange walls and folk art evoke an Old-Mexico feeling. With only counter service El Meson employs a welcoming but fend-for-yourself mentality. The menu offers traditional Mexican dishes including tender chicken in pipian a mole sauce with a... read more

When you hear the word diner you probably think greasy spoon. 24 Diner is anything but. Essentially we took all the elements of the concept we liked ' classic American cuisine good service fun atmosphere ' and turned it up about 10 notches. We offer chef-inspired comfort food local & organic fare a full bar and a killer beer & wine list. A finer diner if you will. And you can stop in anytime. We're open 24 hours a day and located downtown in the heart of Central Austin at 6th and Lamar. We were inspired by the classic diners... read more

Texas Pizza is another one of Austin's great small restaurants. The Greek pizza hot subs and lasagna are my personal favorites but I have never had a bad dish from this place. The cold subs aren't that great but the hot subs definitely make Quizno's look like garbage. Their delivery service is timely the minimum order for delivery is lower than most and their delivery charge is only a dollar so if you live in their delivery area they make a nice alternative to typical takeout fare. A large selection of salads and pasta dishes makes the cornmeal-cardboard pizza crust... read more

Back in 1938 a guy named Coach decided he wanted to open a bar. He wanted his bar to feature the coldest beer in town and he wanted it served by friendly beautiful girls from Texas. If his customers could get that plus a place to watch the game hang out with good friends and sit outside on a nice deck he'd be a real happy bar owner. Ol' Coach didn't know much about the business so he took a weekend job as a barback at a well known Honkey Tonk in Pasadena. During the week he was a doorman... read more

Our Mission Austin Monthly called us "Anti-Fast Food." We like that. If we had to sum up our mission in a single phrase that pretty much covers it. The whole idea for opening a hamburger stand actually started as a reaction to reading the book Fast Food Nation. We were appalled by the direction the food service industry had taken. We decided that if we ever had the opportunity to start our own burger place we'd do things the way they should be done. But it's not just about the food. We wanted to change the way things are cooked... read more

Our espresso is the Espresso Medici blend. It is sweet fruity and nutty with a caramel butter finish. Preparation is of utmost importance to us. Our espresso machine is a La Marzocco FB 80 (3 group). We pull 1.5-2 oz of espresso at 24 to 26 seconds in 18 gram baskets. Espresso machine maintenance is a high priority which is why we back flush at noon evening and a deep clean at night.
