Introduction
Paul Joseph bought the original cafe on this site, Schoonerville, in 1952, renaming it El Patio. His son, David, runs the place today, and it has a strong family vibe. Despite the name, there's no patio--just a narrow room divided into two sections and decorated with pictures of famous patrons. The menu is strictly old-fashioned Tex-Mex. The El Patio No. 1 has queso to go with its guacamole, beef taco, cheese enchilada and tamale.
This is like that place in your hometown that you loved growing up. They always super friendly, and the owners are always there working. They go out of their way to make you feel like home. The food is very filling, and pretty damn good as well. I think what makes this place different than other Mexican restaurants is that they do not try to be something they are not. They are old school, and the place is not very big. I have no idea how it is on campus, and students are not filling this place up. The crowd there always seems to be filled with regulars. Any time I have people in from out of town, and want some good Mexican food, I take them here. This is not the place for you if you are looking for something fantasy. It is just good ole close to home Mexican food!
PS
Get the queso because the fried corn chips that come with it make it awesome!
