Introduction
La Pergola has already had a long life in the eating out scene in Carlisle.
It began its life as a coffee shop in the 1960's ( 'The Castle Boutique') in the basement of a fine Georgian building before becoming one of Carlisle's first Italian restaurants in the 1970's.
It became La Pergola in 1991 and in 2009 the restaurant manager Andrew Hartley and head chef Nestor de Jesus ( who have between them over a decade of service at La Pergola and some 40 years in the catering trade) bought the restaurant with the intention to keep it the successful traditional restaurant so many locals and not so locals know and love. There is a copy of the menu in Pirelli's Milan factory in Italy for those who come to the Carlisle plant for instance!
Pasta & Pizza are the dishes most associated with Italy and are well represented in La Pergola's menus as are a wide range of meat, poultry & fish dishes. As far as we can we use local suppliers, providing local fresh produce to create our dishes.
We all know Italians love food- not least of all their 'dolci', desserts to round of your meal, if you have room!
We have a range of traditional desserts such as Tirasmisu or Zabaglioni- a host of ice creams from English Lakes Ice Creams based locally in Kendal and a weekly changing list of sweets from our team of chefs.
Wines from Italy are well represented, with some 20 different labels, as are wines from other significant world producers on the wine list ( ask Andrew for any specials lurking in the wine cellar not on the list! ) and the bar is well stocked with spirits, malt whiskys, cognacs and soft drinks to compliment your meal.
The main room of the restaurant has 7 tables and can seat up to 30 people but is equally intimate at the same time with a host of masks & prints from Venice and other iconic Italian views. Alternatively, the restaurant has a number of romantic alcove tables for private dining for couples or parties of 4.
We may well have reason to say we have had more marriage proposals than any other Italian restaurant in Carlisle.
A small room to the rear of the restaurant can seat some 14 for private parties and is styled individually from the main restaurant area.
With so many old English buildings the restaurant comes with its own ghost! - a maid who lived and worked in the main building above has been 'sensed' and on occasion seen over the years. But fear not, she is not to be feared and tends only to pop along to see how things are going in a building she seems to be to so closely associated with that she doesn't want to leave. So if you feel a nudge or a brush of air go past you- its only the good lady checking you are enjoying your meal experincee with ourselves at La Pergola!
