Introduction
We are honored and excited to be the new chapter in a long and rich history.
Our beautiful space, designed by famed architect John A. Bischoff first opened its doors January 15th 1921, as the Elmwood Pharmacy Soda Fountain, serving sandwiches, soups and coffee, to the Berkeley community.
Returning from World War II, aviator Charles 'Ozzieâ? Osborne transformed the sleepy corner soda fountain into a wonderful community gathering spot. For decades, Ozzie, an extraordinary man, fostered an environment where neighbors could get together for more than just food, but also friendship and conversation. It has been our pleasure to know many people who frequented the soda fountain in those days, and hear their wonderful stories
It is with the highest respect for all those who have loved this place throughout the years, that we have now completed our extensive restoration of this historic location.
We saved everything we could. All of the display cabinets, and oak paneling are original to the building dating back to 1921. While bringing everything up to date, we were careful to preserve the original finish and patina. We were also able to save Ozzie's counter, with its fabulously uneven little red stools.
We wish to thank all of you who have enthusiastically supported our reopening of the space. Whether you have been coming here for many years, or are a new part of our history, your support has been truly heartwarming.
We believe that good food comes from good ingredients. We buy the highest quality products available. Organic, whenever possible, and of equal importance, locally sourced from artisinal producers. By doing so, we can take advantage of the freshness of seasonal produce.
We make everything we can in house. All of our baked goods are made fresh daily, by our pastry chef Stephany. Even our jams, chutneys, and the fruit syrups for our sodas are homemade.
Inspired by what looks good at the farmer's market, our chef Kate changes our menu daily to highlight the best fruits and vegetables of the season.
We think that the simple things in life can be really fantastic when done well.
