This agricultural society was located in Peru ' Ancash or Chavín Region and developed around 900 B.C. At an elevation of 3,150 m., Chavín was situated at the bottom of Cordillera Blanca's eastern slopes, approximately halfway between tropical forests and coastal plains. The Chavín culture is known for its beautiful art and design, which can seem very puzzling to the untrained eye. Chavín designs can be appreciated only as abstract patterns, but there is almost always representational meaning behind them, but Chavín was also innovative with metallurgy and textile production. Cloth production was revolutionized during the time of Chavín. New techniques and materials are popular through the use of llama's hair, textile painting, dying and the 'resist� painting style similar to modern day tie-dye. Advances in metallurgy also occurred during the Chavín's reign in Peru such as joining pieces of pre-shaped metal sheets to form both objects of art and objects for practical use. Soldering and temperature control were also advanced during this time. The Inca Empire was tremendously influenced by Chavín.
