Introduction
Epic Games’ “Fortnite,†the popular multiplayer battle royale game, has surprised everyone with the introduction of this new emote, inspired by the Rickrolling meme. The emote plays part of the actual song by Rick Astley, “Never Gonna Give You Up,†as your in-game character dances just like Astley does in the original music video.
The song was released in July 1987 as the first single from Astley’s debut album “Whenever You Need Somebody.†The song quickly became a worldwide hit and remained the best-selling single of that year for five weeks in the United Kingdom.
The song is also famous for the internet prank known as “rickrolling,†which involves misleading links that lead you to Rick Astley’s song on YouTube. The prank was initially started by the 4chan users back in 2007, but it kept getting more and more popular over the internet, and here we are. The official music video of “Never Gonna Give You Up†by Rick Astley on YouTube has more than 666 million views, with over 5 million likes.
The emote is named “Never Gonna†and is available in Fortnite’s in-game shop for 500 bucks, which approximates to about $5.
The Fornite’s twitter page posted a video with the title ‘Watch How This Bear Made “The Unlikeliest Of Friends†on February 15, 2020. The video itself is a rickroll: anyone clicking through will see Fortnite’s Fishstick and Polar Patroller Characters dancing to the song “Never Gonna Give You Up†by Rick Astley.
The official YouTube account of Rick Astley commented on Fortnite’s video, “Can’t believe I’ve been rickrolled by a fish pretending to be me.†The comment was pinned to the top. Rick Astley also shared a post on his official twitter account, revealing the new Fortnite emote with a video of Fishstick dancing to his song “Never Gonna Give You Up.â€
Around December 2018, Epic Games was already hit with several lawsuits that alleged the company stole popular dance moves and sold them as in-game emotes. But, the fact that Epic Games licensed internet-famous hit “Never Gonna Give You Up†by Rick Astley for the new emote has opened many possibilities where other licensed songs might be used in the game, as well. We might get to see a lot of other songs turned into in-game emotes in the future.
