Coach Barb Wagstaff…
1) Founder and President of Diabetes Advocacy. (2002 to Present). Diabetes Advocacy has led the way in Canadian Advocacy initiatives for over ten years now. Reaching over a thousand people on a daily basis through the Diabetes Advocacy website, Facebook, Twitter, and her own blog space, Barb has continued to share and work with people living with diabetes all over the world. Her work has influenced the Canadian government to make changes to the Disability Tax Credit, as well as influenced various provincial governments who have implemented insulin pump programs. She has been recognized with www.childrenwithdiabetes.com in the 2007 Jeff Hitchcock Award and continues to be an active staff member of the Children with Diabetes Friends for Life Canada Conferences.
2) Experienced in Diabetes Care. (2000 to Present). March 17, 2000 Barb’s two year old son was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit and given 24 hours to live. This was her introduction to the world of Type 1 diabetes. Since that date, Barb has been actively involved in the diabetes community worldwide gaining knowledge about diabetes and its treatment options. She has strived to maintain excellent control in her son’s diabetes care, offer him the best available tools, and teach him to handle his own care as he ages.
3) Advocate, Educator and Social Supporter. (2001 to Present). Once the initial shock of diagnosis wore off, Barb made it her mandate to advocate for the best possible care and resources for people with diabetes. She has worked tirelessly to educate governments, policy makers and educators in the realities of life with diabetes. She has also spent many years active in the diabetes communities both online and throughout North America offering a compassionate ear and the voice of experience.
4) Lover of learning and personal growth . (1991 to present). Barb has a psychology degree from the University of Calgary and has always loved learning about people, social relationships, and the mind-body connection. She is a voracious reader of titles on spirituality, personal growth, chronic illness and mental well-being. In her ever expanding question for knowledge and growth, in the fall of 2012 Barb completed the Certified Coaches Federation’s Life Coaching Program and is now a Certified Coach Practitioner. This is an area that she is passionate about and feels that she has found her true calling by being able to help people find balance in all areas of their lives!
