Introduction
In his younger days, Robert Mayfield, owner of Wally's Burger Express was on his way to get a puppy with his two young boys, Linton 8 and Nate 5.
They happened upon the local puppy love shelter where the boys saw a Courtney/Terrier mix puppy. It was love at first site for the boys and for the puppy they named Wally. The puppy was saved from being put to sleep at the local poundâ?¦and the family had a new friend.
After rescuing Wally, the family stopped to get hamburgers. Being young, the boys didn't finish their burgers and put them in the back of the car. Wally, being a curious puppy, rustled through the bag in the back of the station wagon. She unwrapped the unfinished burgers, move the bun aside, pushed the lettuce and pickles away and proceeded to eat the burger and the bun, even though it had mustard on it.
The family was surprised Wally loved burgers with mustard. But, any time they went for burgers, they'd bring back a burger for Wally and she'd always do the same, push away the lettuce and pickles and eat the burger, mustard and the bun, thus starting a new tradition in the Mayfield family.
Wally was smart. In fact, every time the family (Wally included) would drive by the restaurant she'd barkâ?¦this puppy knew her hamburgers.
When the family had cookouts with steaks and burgers, Wally would turn her nose at the steak and would always prefer a hamburger with mustard and a bun.
When the Mayfield's bought the hamburger restaurant, it became a tribute to Wally and has been since 1980.
So, next time you stop in at Wally's Burger Express, look for Wally's picture on the wall and say thanks for your free Wallyburger. She loved the burgers and so will you.
