Meet Our Team (1)
Angela Barker-Dench
Principal
Angela Barker-Dench will take up the position of Principal of UTC Swindon in September 2013.
Angela will oversee the sympathetic conversion of historically significant buildings into the state-of-the-art learning facility that UTC Swindon will become. The engineering heritage of the college site will be honoured and amplified through the refurbishment process.
Angela will also manage the teacher and student recruitment campaigns. Teaching staff will be recruited from schools, further education and private sector industry backgrounds to ensure an excellent mix of experience and expertise. Student recruitment, which is already underway, aims to attract 150 year 10s and 150 year 12s to start at UTC Swindon in September 2014.
An ongoing part of Angela’s role is to promote awareness of UTC Swindon’s technical education programme and develop the college’s role in the wider community. Angela will also build strong relationships in the educational sector across Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and West Berkshire.
Angela joins UTC Swindon from Capel Manor College in Enfield, Middlesex, where she was appointed Vice Principal in August 2011. She also held the roles of Deputy Principal at Berkshire College of Agriculture between June 2009 and March 2011 and Assistant Principal for Higher Education at Filton College, Bristol between January 2007 and June 2009. Angela also was part of the senior management team for nearly 4 years, 10 years ago.
Angela’s interest in engineering dates back to 1980 when she began an apprenticeship in electrical engineering with General Electric (GE). Here, she developed a specific interest in design engineering and was sponsored by GE to take formal qualifications (ONC and HNC in Electrical and Electronic Engineering) at Stafford College and North Staffs Polytechnic. It was during this period that Angela’s interest in teaching and training first surfaced. In the late 1980s, while working full-time at GEC, Angela took up evening role as an engineering lecturer at the Birmingham Metropolitan College, formerly Matthew Boulton College.
Angela lives in Gloucestershire. Away from work, her interests include spending time with her children aged 11 and 14, gardening and cooking).
