Introduction
Tumor markers are usually referred to as biomarkers which tend to be expressed at elevated levels in cancer patients. The detection of these markers can be carried out in various samples such as: blood, body tissues, plasma or urine. They can be instrumental in the diagnosis of many cancers, as well helping in monitoring the response to specific treatment/therapy and also predicting the chance of recurrence.
Tumor marker tests are often used to screen cancer patients that are considered a high risk to a particular disease. In some cases it may be carried out in order to understand better and learn more about a cancer when it has been initially diagnosed. As with majority of laboratory procedures, tumor marker assays need to be both sensitive and specific. Different biomarker are designed to detect different cancers.
