Introduction
Triheptanoin is a triglyceride that is used for the treatment of inherited metabolic diseases, epilepsy, ventricular hypertrophy and myocardial glucose oxidation.
Treatment with triheptanoin has been recommended by Roe and colleagues in patients with long-chain FAOD who have persistent myopathy or cardiomyopathy despite treatment with conventional MCT preparations (Roe et al. 2002). According to this study, it is suggested that the poor response to even-chain MCT may be due to citric acid cycle intermediates leaking out of muscle and heart mitochondria in these patients.
