Introduction
Thunderbird is a locally owned café in Austin, Tx. We have two locations in great neighborhoods, Cherrywood (East Austin) and Brentwood/Crestview (North Central). We specialize in high-quality direct-trade coffee and fine craft beers. We also have a great selection of snacks and light fare.
They're our two favorite beverages! So many places sell coffee or beer'or sell both, but one of them almost as an afterthought. We wanted a place where you can get both great coffee and great beer and meet people who feel the same way.
Thunderbird goes much farther than fair trade. We focus on roasters who use a more transparent 'direct tradeâ? model, which cuts out the middle man, and leaves no questions about how much the farmers and pickers are getting paid for their work.
Our primary roaster is Cuvee Coffee Roasting Company, located just a few miles away in Spicewood, TX. We also use other premium direct-trade roasters such as Intelligentsia, Counter Culture, and Verve.
Single-cup coffee is coffee brewed by the cup in the most exacting ways possible. For maximum quality and consistency, coffee for each cup is weighed to the gram and the water is weighed to the 1/10th of an ounce. We offer three different methods (Hario V60 pourover, Siphon, and Chemex), each of which highlights different aspects of a coffee's flavor. With two different coffees every week, our single cup coffee bar is the ideal place to challenge your palate and grow your coffee knowledge with a like-minded community of coffee lovers. Come check out our single-cup bar on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our Koenig Lane location!
We have daily beer specials at both locations (take a gander to the right to see what's on special today!), and we have an ever-rotating and very special selection of coffees.
The Austin coffee scene is growing every day, and we're proud to be a part of it. From humble beginnings as a neighborhood coffee shop, Thunderbird has grown to two locations both considered among the best place to get a cup of coffee or a cold beer.
Direct-trade is our standard
Many roasters and coffee shops talk about being 'fair tradeâ? or 'working with the farmer,â? but few can really back it up. Thunderbird works only with roasters with true direct trade practices that involve the farmers, pickers, and processors in the country of origin as an equal part of the coffee-development process. This means that our roasters travel all over the world, many times per year, to develop and maintain real relationships with the people who grow your coffee.
Training, re-training
Of course, all that hard work and travel amounts to very little if the person making the coffee in front of you hasn't been trained properly. Our baristas visit our roasting facility for a full day of training upon being hired, and we go back to train and re-train consistently.
Our experimental phase doesn't end
At Thunderbird, we feel like although a lot has been learned about all things coffee, there's always more to discover. That's why we started our single-cup bar: To give you a chance to begin a conversation about coffee and all it can do. We work with brewing methods that give each cup a new life. We think you'll love it. Come by on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at our Koenig location! More info on our single-cup bar coming soon.
You can take it with you
We sell all of our coffees in bulk for you to enjoy at home. Because we change our coffee blends and origins over the course of the year due to availability and picking the best crops, you'll want to click here to see what's fresh in our rotation right now. And when you buy a bag of our bulk coffee, you get a free coffee drink. Great deal!
It's simple: We love coffee, and we want you to fall in love with it, too. We've done our best to create a space where anyone can come in and order anything from a simple shot of espresso to a single-origin Guatemalan Pourover, and realize that better ingredients, better training, and a strong love for coffee makes a difference.
