The Missouri Lounge

'The Missouri Lounge, or 'the Misery Lounge,� as it is affectionately called by patrons, has been keeping people hip since 1953. Its décor hasn't changed since then (think gold velvet couches, framed landscapes, and antique TVs for turntable stands) but West Berkeley's longest running dive bar has figured out how to cater to everyone. Grab one of the drink specials, like the aptly named 'the Special�(whiskey + PBR) or its cousin, 'El Especial� (Tecate + tequila) while the rotating bevy of DJs spins everything from punk, to funk, to indie dance. On Friday nights, the dance floor is packed. Bonus: if you get the munchies, chef Naughty Natto's grill serves up meat-laden hoagies until 12:30am.� ' Flavorpill

'On its MySpace page, Berkeley's Missouri Lounge declares its interests as 'Bum jam, cheap booze, beef sticks, booty bombs and smooth jams, pool, baseball, outlaws, drink wheel, [and] keeping the regulars in check.� Oh, and apparently the bar is also a Sagittarius ' which would make sense considering its rabble-rousing independence from all things hygienic and wholesome. Known to some as the 'misery lounge,� the ambiance at the Missouri is nothing short of second-rate, and never disappoints. Don't be fooled by the younger, hipper weekend crowd and nightly DJ sets ' hitting up the bar midweek at happy hour is enough to convince anyone that this ain't no lush lounge.
