Introduction
The Lord Nelson is a traditional 300 year old inn and restaurant in the sleepy Oxfordshire village of Brightwell Baldwin. Originally constructed as a thatched cottage, later additions to the original stone building include 18th century gable ends and a quaint veranda facing the village church.
During Nelson's time the pub was simply known as the Admiral Nelson. When Nelson was made a peer in 1797 the pub’s name was changed to reflect this. Over the following century The Lord Nelson continued life as the village pub until, in 1905, after complaints about the estate workers’ ‘over-indulgence’ from the church and the local squire, it was was closed down. The building then became a shop, a post office and finally a private house.
In 1971, it was bought by a couple who fell in love with the building as they drove past and decided to restore it to its former glory. The Lord Nelson re-opened as a Free House on the 21st October 1971, Trafalgar Day.
Today the Lord Nelson Inn is full of fresh flowers, interesting paintings and candlelight and a splendid inglenook fireplace. It is the perfect place to relax after a country walk or a day at the office. During the summer, the pretty terraced garden with its views of the Oxfordshire countryside is a popular place to relax.
The food served at The Lord Nelson is of the highest quality, freshly cooked, using local produce where possible. The house menu begins with a complimentary basket of bread and olives and there are light main course options available. There is also an extensive 'international' wine list. As a Free House, the Lord Nelson offers Black Sheep, Rebellion IPA and Brakspears Bitter on hand pump as well as regular guest beers.
The Lord Nelson can cater for meetings, private parties and celebrations of almost any kind. Why not pop in for a drink or a meal and we'd be more than happy to discuss your requirements.
