Introduction
What is Bowen Therapy?
Bowen Therapy is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed by
the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia. It utilises small but measured inputs to the body stimulating the body to heal itself, often profoundly.
Bowen Therapy usually results in the relief of many specific injuries and other health problems, both acute and chronic. It does so holistically, by using the body's innate healing mechanisms. The Bowen therapist delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations (on muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves), and the body does the rest, responding in it's own time, as it is able.
Rather than focussing on a single complaint, Bowen Therapy addresses the entire body, by restoring balance via the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The ANS controls over 80% of bodily functions and is highly susceptible to external stressors. Most people today live in a constant state of high stress and sympathetic ANS over-stimulation (fight or flight mode). Healing can only occur in the body after the ANS shifts from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance (rest, relax and repair mode). Bowen Therapy seems to catalyse that shift. During a treatment session, clients often drop into a deep relaxation or fall asleep. These types of symptoms are indications of a profound release from stress and a shift towards parasympathetic dominance. This shift could explain why Bowen Therapy seems to reactivate the recovery process in situations where healing from trauma, sickness or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau.
A Bowen session usually last about 45 minutes. The moves are gentle yet purposeful and can be performed through light clothing if the client so wishes. Clients usually lie on a bodywork table but the treatment can also be performed while sitting in a chair, if need be, for comfort sake. A Bowen session consists of a set of procedures with different moves. Between each set of moves, the practitioner pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the client's body to begin responding. After the nervous system begins to make adjustments in the body, the body is ready for the next set of moves.
Bowen Therapy is gentle, non-invasive and extremely effective. It is therefore suitable and safe to be performed on anyone from new born babies to the old and frail.
Some of the conditions that respond well to Bowen:
- back pain and sciatica
- digestive and bowel problems
- earache and TMJ problems
- migraines and headaches
- fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue
- hip, knee, ankle and foot problems
- menstrual and hormonal problems
- neck and shoulder problems
- groin pain, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length
- respiratory and hayfever problems
- carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow
- sports injuries
- fertility and pregnancy problems
- paediatric problems (cholic, neck restriction etc)
- stress and fatigue.
