Introduction

Ethiopia boasts the highest number of UNESCO World Heritage sites in Africa. Its capital city, Addis Ababa, also serves as the political, economical and social center for the whole of Africa. The country's pristine culture combines with its abundant natural assets to give tourists a flavor of the greater continent. Ték tours aims to give you an experience of Africa in one country.

Ték Tours is a new venture by a company that is well-established in the Ethiopian hospitality industry. We offer holidays to all parts of Ethiopia. We have experience in operating several hotels including 4* hotel in the capital Addis Ababa and can guarantee competitively priced bookings at hotels and lodges in different corners of the country. We are dedicated to ensuring that every guest has an enjoyable and rewarding experience at minimum cost.

Where to go?

Ethiopia has recently prided itself as a leading country for possessing more World Heritage Sites than any other African countries with the newly inscribed cultural landscape of Konso. The World Heritage Sites of Ethiopia offer you all the highlights and major attractions of the country. These thrilling sites are the Axum Stele Fields, Fasil Ghebbi of Gondar, Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, Harar Jugol, Tiya Stele, Simien Mountains National Park, Lower Valley of the Awash, Lower Valley of the Omo and the Konso Cultural Landscape. Have a discovery tour of Ethiopia’s major attractions visiting these magnificent grand sites as well as some of the equally precious attractions, which are already on the UNESCO tentative list, waiting for their turn.

When to visit?

When winter begins in the Western world, Ethiopia is in the middle of its dry season and is enjoying clear blue sky and equatorial brightness. This period extends from October through to May and is certainly convenient for tourists from most Western countries to come to Ethiopia. It is now possible to visit the northern part of Ethiopia during the rainy season from June to September as the airports along the Historic Route have been upgraded. It may not be very easy to travel to the south western part of the country during the region’s rainy season (from March to May). However, visitors who do not mind waiting out a downpour (usually followed by brilliant sunshine), will be rewarded by the very captivating and beautiful landscape full of crops and flowers, clean stream, green hills and mountains.

For those who are interested in attending one of Ethiopia’s colorful religious festivals or events, you should plan your trips to Ethiopia in the months in which the festivals and events take place:

Genna (Ethiopian Christmas) (January)

Genna or Ethiopian Christmas falls on 7 January. Genna is celebrated after 43 days fasting known as Tsome Gahad (Advent), with a spectacular procession, which begins at 6 am and lasts until 9 am in all Orthodox Tewahedo Churches.

Timkat (Epiphany) (January)

Timket is one of the greatest festival in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church calendar. It commemorates Christ's Baptism by Saint John in the Jordan River. Timket is celebrated on 19 January, two weeks after the Ethiopian Christmas. Dressed in the dazzling white of the traditional dress, the locals provide a dramatic contrast to the jewel colors of the ceremonial velvets and satins of the priests' robes and sequined velvet umbrellas.

The Victory of Adwa(March)

The Battle of Adwa was one of the most significant turning points in the history of modern Africa. It occurred, in 1896, when the “colonial era” was well advanced on the African continent. It marked the entry of Ethiopia into the modern community of nations. The Battle of Adwa, which took place on March 1 and 2, 1896, at Adwa, one of the principal towns in the Tigray Region, is celebrated each year with patriot’s procession, folkloric music and dances, etc. One can see the celebration that is held around Giorgis area in Addis, near the equestrian statue of Emperor Menelik II.

Hosanna

Palm Sudnay or Hosanna is celebrated before a week of Easter. It commemorates the triumphal entry of Jesus Christ with the disciples into Jerusalem. People welcomed Jesus by spreading palm branches. The best places to observe this ceremony are at Entoto St. Mary in Addis Ababa and St. Mary Zion Church in Axum.

Ethiopian Good Friday

Good Friday is one of the main parts of the Easter Passover celebrations that takes place two days before the Palm Sunday or Hosanna in Ethiopia. Many believers of the Orthodox Tewahido Christians go to the nearby churches and make intensive prayers bowing down on their Knees as many times as they can. One understands the deep rooted religious belief among Orthodox Christian Ethiopians.

Fasika (Ethiopian Easter)

Fasika (Ethiopian Easter) is celebrated after 55 days of severe Lent fasting (Hudade or Abye Tsome). On Easter Eve, people go to church and celebrate with candles which are lit during a colorful Easter mass service that is conducted at night until 2 pm in the morning.

While staying at the Panorama Hotel Addis Ababa we have been delighted with the service from Tek Tours. We have organised a half day tour of different sites of Addis. Our guide was Keb who was very knowledgable and passionate about telling us the history and the way of life in Ethiopia. Wolageta was our driver who always got us to our destination safely and with a smile. We organised our excursions with Hanna who is based at the hotel, whom is a professional friendly girl, who was so helpful and accommodating. While in Addis or anywhere in Ethiopia I would highly recommend Tek Tours.
