Spinal decompression is an advanced form of spinal traction. Traction for the relief of neck and back pain has a very long history of evolution. Traction is an intermittent or continuous force applied to the spine to stretch or elongate the spine.When traction is applied to the spine the body will react to pull in the opposite direction. This can limit the effects of traction. Spinal decompression minimizes this reaction due to its mechanical design. The equipment contains computer feedback mechanisms such as strain gauges that continuously monitor the muscular reactions and then adjusts the pulling forces of the equipment in an attempt to bypass the body's reaction to resist the stretch.
