Dental sealant is a plastic resin that bonds to the deep grooves in the tooth’s chewing surface. Sealant fills in those grooves so that the tooth’s surface is smooth and less likely to build up plaque.
Dental sealants make brushing your teeth easier and more effective against fighting tooth decay. It’s important to remember that sealant is only placed on the surface of the tooth. The areas on the sides and in between your teeth are still susceptible to decay. However, having good oral hygiene and nutrition and getting regular cleanings (with fluoride) can help prevent decay. To completely avoid decay, you should also brush and floss on a daily basis and limit the amount sugary foods you consume.
