Introduction
The city of Siena lies in the hills of Italy's western coast region. Siena is one of the many cities of the Tuscany region, which has long been an important center for arts and learning.
Siena was home of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of Italy and contains one of the most famous medieval cathedrals of Europe.
The Piazza del Campo in Siena is internationally famous for its bi-yearly horserace known as the Palio. This race is run on July 2nd in commemoration of the miracles of the Madonna of Provenzano and on August 16th to honor the assumption of the virgin. Since the 11th century, this race has been run with representatives from each of the city's 17 contradas. Each contrada brings colors and designs of their own, prominently displayed on their jockeys and horses. Although, the horserace itself lasts less than two minutes, the festivities leading up to this important event last for months including processions and mass dinners for each constrada.
Excitement and political involvement grow at great extents as the days before the race draw to a close. Only ten of the seventeen contradas can participate at one time, and the seven that do not participate in the first race are automatically registered for the second race. Each contrada has a museo della contrada in which mementoes, drawings, paintings, photographs, sacred objects, locks of horse mane, military uniforms, and every single banner won by the represented contrada are displayed.
