Shibori West Textiles

For over 30 years I have been designing and making one-of-a-kind textiles and clothing using an ancient Japanese dyeing technique, arashi shibori, to create intricate patterns that can resemble moth wings, snake skin, mushroom gills and other natural phenomenom. In fact, the Japanese word shibori means wind blown water because that is how arashi dyed cloth can look. I began working with cloth and dyes in 1969 while still in college. Since I have always been interested in Japanese art and culture, when I had the chance in 1981 to take a class in Japanese Dyeing Techniques, I knew that was for me. I was very fortunate to have two wonderful artists for teachers, Anna Lisa Hedstrom and Yoshiko Wada. Ms. Wada also leads Slow Fiber and other tours to Japan. In 1993 a textured jacket of mine was accepted in a major art exhibit, The 3rd Biennial International Textile Exhibit, Kyoto. Since then I've been back to Japan four times, twice for group shows sponsored by the World Shibori Network, once for a solo shows at The Original Box in Kyoto, and once in Takeda San's Gallery in Arimatsu.
