Warrant of Fitness (WOF) Checks
A warrant of fitness (WoF) is a regular check to ensure that your vehicle meets required safety standards.
As a car owner it’s your job to always keep your car up to WoF condition. For example, while tyres on your vehicle may pass on the day of your warrant inspection, you’ll need to replace them as soon as the tread gets to the minimum depth. If you wait until the next inspection before replacing them, you increase your risk of having a crash or receiving a fine.
How often a WoF is required
Vehicles first registered anywhere in the world on or after 1 January 2000 will need annual WoF inspections for their lifetime. For new vehicles, after an initial inspection, another WoF inspection won't be required until the 3rd anniversary of their first registration.
The length of time a WoF is issued for is calculated based on the vehicle’s date of first registration in New Zealand or overseas
A WoF inspection will cover :
Tyre condition (including tread depth)
Brake operation
Structural condition (rust is not allowed in certain areas)
Lights
Glazing (is your windscreen safe?)
Windscreen washers and wipers
Doors (do they open and close safely?)
Safety belts (must not be damaged or overly faded; buckles must work properly)
Airbags (if fitted)
Speedometer (must be working)
Steering and suspension (must be safe and secure)
Exhaust (there must be no leaks and the exhaust must not be smoky or louder than the original exhaust system)
Fuel system (there must be no leaks).
A WoF is not a pre-purchase inspection. Therefore, it will not include certain areas of a vehicle's condition such as:
Engine, clutch, gearbox and differential condition
Lubricant levels and condition
Brake pad thickness or life expectancy, unless they are visibly below safe limits
Paint work condition and some rust in non-structural areas.
What to expect after the inspection
If your vehicle passes its WoF inspection, the inspector will apply the WoF label on the inside of your front windscreen, on the driver’s side. You need to get your next warrant before the expiry date on the label.
If your vehicle fails a WoF inspection, you cannot drive it on the road unless you’re taking it somewhere to get it repaired or to get a new WoF. Make sure it’s safe to drive however.
Of course, Servo can help you by finding quotes for your WoF repairs from workshops near you.
In 2021 40% of WoF checks resulted in a fail so if you are in that situation remember that you are not under any obligation to have the repairs completed by the workshop that completed your WoF check. Using Servo is the perfect way to shop around and see if you can save on that repair and then return your vehicle for a re-check.
Scheduled Servicing, Oil changes
Most newer vehicles specify servicing intervals at 12 months or 15,000km whichever occurs first, however most vehicles will also have different requirements at selected service intervals, for example the manufacturer may specify that the brake fluid is flushed every 36 months or 45,000km and the fuel filter might require changing at 90,000km.
If a vehicle is older, it is recommended that a regular service every 6 months or 10,000kms whichever comes first would be worthwhile but by regular service an engine oil change and filter every time and other fluids and filters (transmission, cooling system, brake fluid, air & fuel filters) should be checked and replaced depending on condition.
Its also worth keeping in mind how you use your vehicle and how that might relate to service requirements, for example if you tow frequently or drive on dusty roads or frequent the mountains on ski trips then you might want to be more cautious about checking things on a regular basis.
Use Servo to find trusted service providers who will look after your interests and only do what is necessary each time the car returns for service.
Tyres and related services
The min legal tread depth for tyres in NZ is 1.5mm which is not much given that tyres are the only thing between your car and the road. Tyres can also wear unevenly so it’s important to check them regularly and keep them inflated correctly. Incorrectly inflated tyres can be dangerous, can wear out faster and result in reduce fuel economy.
For Warrant of Fitness requirements, tyres on the same axle must be of the same size designation, construction and the same tread pattern type (e.g. asymmetrical, directional, rotational). However, there is no legal requirement for tyres on all axles to be the same tread, even though NZTA indicates that fitting four identical tyres (preferably summer) provides the best grip.
There are all sorts of different types of tyres to suit different driving conditions and types of vehicles. It can be confusing to understand what you can mix and match safely, especially if you don’t know too much about cars.
When investing in new tyres its also recommended to get a wheel alignment to help maximise the life of the tyres. When buying tyres, it really does pay to shop around. There are around 1,000 tyre retailers in NZ so the best way to shop around for tyres in your local area is to shop around on Servo.
Brake service and repairs
Your car brakes are one of the most critical parts of a motor vehicle. Failing brakes can cost you dearly, but most issues give you plenty of warning before failure occurs.
A Warrant of Fitness (WoF) inspection will check how well your brakes are working and whether there are any faults such as leaking fluid or worn pads. Noisy brakes are one of the most common braking system issues a car owner will notice.
Signs of issues with your car's brakes can include;
Brakes grind or squeal
Brake pedal is low, hard, soft or spongy
Steering wheel shudders under braking
Your car loses grip under braking
Your pulls to one side under braking
Brake pads are the most common form of braking hardware on a motor vehicle. Brake pads wear over time and need to be replaced once they are worn down to unsafe levels. Brake pads usually last around 45,000 – 60,000km, but this may be less or more, depending on the driving you are doing.
Brake pads are located inside the brake caliper, which forces the pad onto the disc rotor when you press down on the brake pedal. There are two brake pads for every caliper, so for most modern vehicles four brake pads on the front and four on the rear.
They are usually made of a metallic friction material and once this friction material has worn down passed a certain level, usually a few millimetres, the brake pads will need to be replaced.
It is normal practice during brake pad replacement for the disc rotor to also require attention. While they are steel they still wear overtime and provided they are not to thin they can be machined skimmed back to a smooth surface. If they are too thin and no longer meet the minimum specification the rotors can be replaced.
The hydraulic brake fluid should also be flushed and replaced every 3yrs or 45,000kms as it absorbs moisture overtime which can lead to less effective braking systems and lead to premature failure of braking system internals.
By placing you job for brake pad replacement on Servo you can compare quotes and get the best value for money at a location and time that suit you.
Suspension repairs including shock absorbers
There is a lot going on under your car with components such as shock absorbers, ball joints, tie rod ends and bushes all common reasons for WoF failure.
The shock absorbers ensure a smooth and comfortable driving experience and are part of the suspension which makes sure you don’t feel the bumps in the road.
At the same time, the shock absorbers help to keep the car stable on turns and curves on the road. The shock absorbers help to a create comfortable driving experience, but also have an impact on safety when they are worn.
Your springs are an important part of your car suspension. They are what hold the weight of the car, and as they wear, they can sag or break. If your car is on level ground but one corner is lower than the other, that’s a sign of an issue with the springs. You can measure the height of the corners to confirm. You might also hear clunking noises over bumps, and the car may not corner as well because a damaged spring can’t control the weight it’s supporting.
The ball joints are pivot points that attach the suspension to the wheels, and they absorb some of the shock from up-down movement and rotate as the steering angle changes. You’ll know they need replacing when you can hear them squeaking and creaking, especially when turning. A WoF inspection can tell if they need replacing by the amount of wheel movement they can force by hand or, in some cases, by wear indicators on the ball joints.
The control arms are hinges that hold the wheels to the frame and connect the steering to the wheels, so when you turn one, the other responds. Lower control arm bushings are important suspension components and they are more prone to wear out on front-wheel-drive cars than on rear-wheel-drive cars.
Bushes are rubber, metal or nylon parts that are part of the connection between suspension components that move in harmony together, and when they wear, they can cause ride and handling problems and accelerate tire wear. So can a bent control arm. Signs of wear include clunks or rattles because the wheels move back and forth in acceleration and braking and loose, imprecise steering.
There are often more than one repair strategies when it comes to suspension, for example some workshops may quote to replace and entire component where others might quote to remove and repair a component. By placing your job on Servo you’ll get options and choose the one the suits you.
Engine and Mechanical Repairs
Your cars modern engine is a costly item and needs looking after. So be attentive to any odd sounds, smoke or smells. The engine, whether diesel or petrol, is a piece of complicated, high-performance machinery and the very heart of the car. So, look after your engine, never drive too far with the same timing belt. Change the oil regularly and ensure that everything is sorted when its due Spark plugs and cylinder head, catalytic converters and V-belt, fuel injection, fuel pump and everything else. If you need engine repairs place you job on Servo and get the options that suit you.
Battery and Automotive Electrical
If your car cannot start, or your battery goes flat, it may be that the battery is old and worn, or it can be the alternator that does not produce power to the battery. There are also other sources of errors that a mechanic can easily spot.
If the battery is not charging properly, the issue can be several things. Try to get it fully charged first, and if that does not help in the long run, have the battery or the alternator tested, you may have to buy a new battery.
To start the engine, the battery must have power. It also requires power to keep the engine running, so therefore the alternator constantly produces power for the car and recharges the battery. If the alternator fails the battery will not charge.
The alternator is driven by a belt which may be defective and reduce the charging performance.
Exhaust Repairs
To pass a WoF check your car needs to be equipped with an exhaust system in perfect condition The role of the exhaust system is to direct the gases generated by engine combustion safely to the outside of the vehicle, reduce noise, as well as pollution.
The exhaust manifold on the engine collects the gases generated by the combustion of the engine and sends them to the particulate filter. The role of this filter is to collect the harmful particles in the gases and eliminate them to the highest extent possible. Then, the gases are sent to the catalytic converter which will, thanks to a chemical reaction, reduce the toxicity of the exhaust gases.
Before being released into the air, the gases pass through the muffler, which reduces the noise generated by the exhaust system. The gas is then discharged to the outside. These gases are mainly composed of CO2, however they also contain nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide.
Common WoF failure reasons for exhaust systems include manifold gaskets, leaks, corrosion, broken hangers and noise levels. Place your exhaust repair requirements on Servo and get quotes from local specialists near you.
Transmission Service and Repair
Your Automatic transmission is a very complex mechanical and computer driven system. Because of that your automatic transmission can be more expensive to repair than your engine. That means you are better off paying attention if one of these symptoms appear rather than ignoring or waiting for it to go away. It can cost you a lot of inconvenience and money if you neglect its service, common transmission issues include:
Grinding or shaking sensation in gear, this is a more serious problem and time is very important. Be sure to get your car to a qualified automatic transmission specialist soon.
If your car won't engage or respond when in gear, it's time to have someone look at it. Most problems from these symptoms are minor, but it's best to find out for sure so that it doesn't cost more later.
If your transmission is making noises, whining, humming or clunking, noisy in neutral it may be a simple problem due to your transmission fluid, while other times it maybe more serious. Certainly, check your automatic transmission fluid if you can. If you're low, add some. If you're not sure and need peace of mind then place a job on Servo and see who can help.
If you smell burning from your transmission, it’s time to act before it’s a big problem. Check your fluid level if you know how.
Low or Leaking Transmission Fluid Leaks and low fluid are not normal in your transmission. The repair is likely a smaller one if you catch the problem early. Look for red fluid under your car to tell if you have a leak.
If your check engine light is on, have it checked immediately. It may be a very small thing that your computer has sensed and could save you big dollars to get it looked at by a specialist.
Windscreen and Glass Repairs and Replacement
Broken and cracked windscreens can be a common reason for WoF failure and as cars get more and more technologically advanced, repairs and replacements have become more specialised. A windscreen replacement, once a simple process, is now fairly major due to the technology, cameras and sensors sitting behind the glass.
For older vehicles its less of an issue but can still be an expensive exercise if you don’t have windscreen replacement cover on your insurance.
It’s also worth noting that there are more than just a couple of big player in the automotive glazing market and there are also solutions such as second hand windscreens which are perfectly satisfactory for older vehicles.
Placing your windscreen replacement job on Servo could save you money and get that car back to WoF standard in no time.
