Since opening in February 2009, Scaramouche has produced a wide array of projects that explore contemporary culture through site-specific installation, with particular emphasis on conceptual painting, photography, video and performance work. Scaramouche is widely considered one of the premier galleries on New York’s Lower East Side, which has burgeoned into a mecca of contemporary art. The gallery’s artists and its experimental program are consistently followed by the most prestigious art publications, as well as internationally renowned critics. Scaramouche projects have been reviewed and/or featured in Artforum, The New York Times, Art in America, TimeOut New York, New York Magazine, Art India, and FlashArt International, among others.
Since its inception, the gallery has gained a reputation for a rigorous artistic program that includes ambitious installations, culturally and historically relevant group exhibitions by young artists from around the globe, as well as high-profile collaborations with major institutions such as the New Museum, MoMa P.S. 1, and Performa-New Visual Art Performance Biennial.
