Introduction
This charming and cosy three storey Victorian town house is situated in the heart of Mayfair, just minutes from Berkeley Square and tucked away from the noise of high streets. This restaurant offers a buzz of its own and yet a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere with a touch of sophistication. The building is on three floors, all with an elegant character of their own. They are available as private rooms for functions and parties in the evenings or at weekends. Whilst the ground floor is dedicated to dining, the middle floor sports an open kitchen in true PizzaExpress style, leaving the top floor for the sumptuous Mandrake club.
In 1948 Peter Boizot, our founder, visited Italy where he saw pizzas being tossed for the first time. Peter would love to take his friends to watch his favourite pizzaiolo, Benito, in his striped shirt, throwing his pizzas high into the air. Stripes remind us of our origins, which continue to inspire us everyday. And of course, they look good too. To understand us, you need to know Peter. He was just a schoolboy when he first fell in love with pizza. Later, though, he spent years pursuing this obsession on his travels. So many jobs. So many cities. Except for London, where great pizza just did not exist. There was only one thing to do. PizzaExpress was launched in 1965. In Wardour Street. And in chaos. His Italian oven was too big for the door. So he knocked down the wall. Oven in. Oven on. And so it began.
Two years on, Peter had met Enzo Apicella. An amazing artist. A visionary designer. Two people with shared passions. For beautiful music, stunning design, unique experiences and exceptional food. Decades later, those passions still inspire us. Particularly when we shake things up. Because knowing where you come from is the best possible guide to where you should go next.
We love beautiful things. It goes way beyond our food (although that's a great place to start). It's in our bloodstream. It's what we're all about. And it includes our buildings.
