Washington Avenue Corridor, home to Houston’s ever expanding strip of entertainment venues is welcoming a new, considerably less frenetic addition to that sometimes frenetic locale: Pearl Lounge.
“We want to project a ‘neighborhood art bar’ feel with Pearl,†co-owner Mariana Lemesoff says of the new venture.
Proprietor of deep Montrose’s Avant Garden for more than 17 years, Lemesoff is committed to giving Pearl it’s own specific identity on Washington Avenue. “We think of Avant Garden as being performance-driven, but Pearl is muse-driven,†Lemesoff says. “Pearl will focus on the muse.â€
A collaboration of Lemesoff and Girl Jam promoter/producer Julie Mabry, Pearl previously operated under the same name at the same location. The site has also housed a drycleaner, a drug store, and the live music bar, Maryjane’s. Pearl continues its predecessors’ musical traditions, enhanced by a complete renovation directed by Wakefield Crowbar Contractors.
With its high, high beamed ceilings, fully restored natural brick walls, and polished stone appointments, Pearl is industry meets rustic, eclectic meets comfortable, and prohibition meets liberation. Mabry says Pearl’s ambiance distinguishes it from neighboring drinkeries.
“It’s ‘warehouse,’ yet delicate on the inside, like an egg,†she says. “But once inside, you’ll come out of your shell.â€
Pearl is also where inspiration meets libation: An expansive cocktail menu spotlights Texas beers and wines, authentic absinthe, and Lemesoff’s numerous homemade sangrias—a renowned Avant Garden staple.
Both Lemesoff and Mabry are “hands-on owners†committed to establishing Pearl as a long-term Washington Avenue resident that brings diverse options to this equally diverse neighborhood. Free Wi-Fi and a cozy barista coffee bar serving exotic blends are planned to entice those with laptops and sketchpads to Pearl’s interior café tables, and overstuffed chairs and sofas. The remodeled expansive rear patio bar offers comfortable seating, games and flat screen TVs.
