Introduction
The papaya tree premises has been a thai restaurant since the 1960's. we have been told by locals that it was one of the first thai restaurants in london. the owners were at that time, officials from the thai embassy in queens gate, london.
We took over the restaurant in 1997 and began renovating. our aim was to give the restaurant a fresh, bright and contemporary feel. walls were painted white, dark wooden floors were laid and low voltage 'chopstick' halogen lighting was installed.
We pride our food in being authentic, almost homely, so no expense spared, we order in the freshest thai ingredients flown in twice a week direct from thailand. as the key to delicious thai cuisine is in the use of quality herbs and thai vegetables.
We soon discovered that lunchtime on kensington high street was alittle limited, so we created the '£5 lunch' where you can have a quick 1 plate meal starting from £5. perfect for that worktime lunch or a break from the great shopping on the high street.
At lunchtime, papaya tree is bright and buzzy, but the mood changes when evening comes. the candles come out, the lights dim down and the music mellows to smooth jazz, creating a very relaxed atmosphere.
