Introduction
OFM grew from an initiative of Elizabeth Taylor, the founder, when her family lived in London. Marché Biologique were popping up on the Périphérique around Paris allowing French Organic Farmers the opportunity to bring their produce to town. British Organic Farmers were facing the same problem. Traditional supply lines (mainly into supermarkets) did not serve these farmers well. Elizabeth decided to establish an organic food market in central London. The financial crash of 1987 left Spitalfields, the old wholesale fruit & veg market for London located on the edge of the City, unused and with no prospect of development. Elizabeth was invited to establish the organic food market within this large covered building and it was an immediate success. Several other markets were established in England before she migrated to Australia in 1993.
