Introduction
Old Church Farm was formerly known as Alveston Manor and is a designated National Monument in the UK. It is run as a hotel/guest-house/B&B for which it holds the highest accolade - the AA 5 Star Gold Award. It has 7 luxury en suite bedrooms and a communal drawing room, reception area, wood-panelled study, breakfast room and dining room. The building dates back to the reign of King Harold who owned it before his defeat to William I of Normandy. More recent owners over the past 1000 years were Rolls Royce PLC who used it for nearly 70 years as a private hotel for visiting dignitaries. The building has retained several Tudor features, most notably the ornate ceilings in the drawing room and panelled study.
As well as its rooms the house has a reputation for its cuisine. It holds awards from the AA for both Breakfast and Dinner and the kitchen also has a 5 star hygiene rating. The dinner menu is small but changes daily and offers 3 courses of home cooked fayre with fresh ingredients coming from the vegetable garden, the local farmers' markets and our fantastic butcher. In oredr to maintain our high standards for quality and freshness we require 24 hours notice for dinner reservations (guests only).
Outside there is an ornamental rose garden with fish pond, fountain and sundial; a large croquet lawn that doubles as space for a marquee; a walled vegetable garden that supplies the kitchen with much of its fruit & vegetables; a paddock with meadow flora and fauna.
In a separate building that had its origins as a cattle barn is the OCF Bristol Conference Centre, which has meeting rooms for hire and the fabulous historic ruin of the Church of St Helen, which dates back to 900 AD. If you look at the site through Google satellite imagery you can make out an the outline of an old Saxon circular barrow. The main period for their construction was 3500 to 4000 years ago!
