Introduction
Exploring the bay for over 10 years, Ocean Safaris, a family run business, lets the wildlife and weather shape your journey, giving you a unique opportunity to see some of the ocean’s largest and most mysterious inhabitants in their natural environment.
What do I bring along?
Yourself, your family and your friends.
Many of our passengers will want to bring their cameras or video equipment along. We do encourage this and our Skippers will always try to get you into the most favourable position to get great images – while considering the comfort of the animals at all times. While it does happen that we are occasionally not able to get all that close to animals, we find that a camera with a lens of less than 300mm will suffice. On the opposite extreme, sometimes such lenses are too big so it is often wise to bring along a lens with a wider angle in case the animals get really up close and personal. Due to limited deck space and as a courtesy to other passengers, we do not allow the use of tripods and monopods on the trip. Also, be sure to just watch the animals for a while without looking through a viewfinder… some of the finest memories can only be captured in the mind.
With regards to clothing, our best suggestion is that you dress according to the weather on the day of your trip. We would suggest bringing at least a light jumper along, even on hot days as the conditions may well change during the course of the trip. Should you have a weather-proof jacket, this too could come in handy. A hat (although you may have to hold onto it at times), and sunglasses are recommended while high-heels are definitely not appropriate. We suggest you apply sun-screen at least one hour before the trip starts. Should you have concerns with regards to possible motion-sickness, we suggest taking one tablet at least 24 hours before the trip and another one hour beforehand.
What will I be doing?
Exploring the coastline and rich waters in and around our bay, searching for whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, seabirds and more. Come on a voyage of discovery as you search for Plettenberg Bays majestic creatures of the deep.
What will I see?
Our climate is changing and these changes seem to be affecting our marine life, in particular the Southern Rights. Over the past two years, sightings of Southern Right whales have dropped, but we see more Brydes and Humpbacks than before. Our dolphin sightings are awesome and include the playful Bottlenose, energetic Commons and the highly endangered Humpbacked dolphins. A variety of sea birds are sighted as well as the ever growing Cape Fur seal population. We see many different animals that come into our bay to say hello. Particular species cannot be guaranteed as these animals are being viewed in their natural environment and are in and out of our bay at will but times of year can depict their occurrence. This is a true “seafari†and every one is different, you never know what you will find ….
How will I know what to look for?
Highly qualified and experienced marine guides aboard will guide you through the different species you are likely to encounter, showing you how to identify them and where to look. They will be on hand to answer any questions you might have, talk about the history, geology and wildlife during your adventure!
What about the boats?
Ocean Safaris boats are inspected regularly by the South Africa Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA).
With over 10 years of experience operating marine tours in the area ensures we have the right vessel and equipment to help guarantee your safety on every tour.
