Introduction
Fado is the Portuguese traditional song and the word itself comes from the Latin Fatum and means Fate. A song that was first sung by ladies of the night in the poorest neighbourhoods of Lisbon is nowadays sung in the best theatres around the world and you will surely find it one of the most passionate songs you have ever listened to.
O Fado, the restaurant, was established in 1968, in the most vibrant area of London – Knightsbridge. It grew as the place where the Portuguese community used to gather on the late hours in the evening to defeat the “saudades†(longing) they had from their homeland.
Several artists from Portugal have visited the restaurant, from Tristão da Silva, Tony de Matos, Carlos do Carmo, Rui Veloso, Marisa, or even the fado diva Amália Rodrigues herself, just to name but a few.
Nowadays O Fado intends to take it´s proposes even further and divulge the Portuguese Culture to other citizens of London and it has, therefore, loyal friends in the English, mainly considering the ancestral relationship between Portugal and Great Britain, the oldest alliance in the world, but also in the Japanese or Angolan communities.
Every night we recreate for our guests, the ambiance of a Lisbon “house of fado†dignifying and promoting the image of Portugal abroad.
