Is Behavior Modification the True Fountain of Youth?

Behavioral science studies have shown that most health plans and recommendations that cover changing one’s nutrition, losing weight, exercising more, or quitting bad habits do not last. And we know that a doctor's recommendation to change diet and lifestyle is rarely the magic bullet for improving health. There is so much more that needs to happen. However, the main predictor of success in a health program is lasting behavior modifications.
That means changing current habits for better habits, consistently and as permanently as possible.

Changing habits is the most common struggle, even when receiving world-class recommendations or protocols from the best of the best. Many of us still wrestle with ourselves, our inconsistencies, and our character flaws. Have you struggled to change your health behaviors?

Doctors are not trained in Behavioral Change.
Honestly, as doctors, before we founded Novis Health, we should admit that we failed to understand how to create LASTING behavioral change.

As doctors, we have little to no training to support and guide human beings through all the intricacies of consistently changing behavior. Many of us admit that regardless of our ultra-modern standards, and our scientific approach to care, we are not well-equipped to apply the powers of change that lie outside our synthetic knowledge.

Health coaches train with tools like motivational interviewing, character strength development, positive psychology, goal setting, accountability, and they become what we call behavior change ninjas.

Dr. Mark Hyman, MD, said it best:
{The average visit with the doctor is 10 to 12 minutes. Some say with new residents, now it’s as low as eight minutes. That's barely enough time to say hello and write a prescription. It's just, "What's the symptom? What drug can I prescribe to suppress that symptom?" And so, I realized that most healthcare is self-care, as you said, like at least 80%, if not 90% of healthcare happens outside of doctor's offices, even the functional medicine doctor's office}.

Let Me Tell you about Sara,

Before reaching our doors, Sara was treated by four physicians practicing either primary care, endocrinology, and ob-gyn with a focus on women’s health. A psychiatrist also treated her along with three integrated and functional medicine doctors focusing on hormones, low thyroid, and cognitive function. And if that wasn’t enough, she also sought care from nutritionists, dietitians, read books, and followed Instagram “experts.” She even visited the Mayo Clinic.
Even though she received very sound advice, she could never experience lasting healing.

Although Sara researched and was persistent in finding out what was wrong, the medical professionals she visited had overlooked a critical roadblock that would prevent her success.

She lacked the support and guidance necessary to execute the self-care she needed.
Like most of us, Sara struggled with herself. She wanted to be a certain way but acted the opposite of what she wanted.
Sara needed to be consistent enough for her body to have a chance at healing, but that wasn’t happening.
She would start on a plan, not see much change, lose momentum, become frustrated, go back to old patterns. Then rinse and repeat.

As part of Sara’s battle with Hashimoto’s (her cause for low thyroid), she dealt with low energy, inability to focus for long periods, and a degree of depression.
The people in Sara’s life love her deeply. But, they lacked the tools, training, or expertise to offer support. They could not provide guidance or hold her accountable to have a shot at healing given the advice she had received.
