Introduction
North Uist Cottage is set amidst the dramatic grandeur of North Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. This self catering holiday home is perfectly situated for the exploration of this beautiful Scottish island.
The house was the home of the bard ALB and was built in the 19th century; it still retains many of its original features from that time such as the cast iron fireplaces and wood lining.
The house is situated between the Balranald Machair Bird reserve to the south and the stunning beach, Traigh’s tir to the north; a favourite of daring surfers.
The closest beach is Hoglan, just 2 minutes down the track from the house. Depending on the weather changes 40 miles off into the Atlantic, you may be enchanted by the emergence of St Kilda due west.
North Uist is an island of contrasts. To the west the low-lying machair (arable land) stretches into the horizon. Machair is a habitat unique to Scotland and is home to an abundance of wildlife. The shimmering blonde beaches of the west contrast with the rugged moorland coastline to the east. It is an island of lochs interlaced by land.
The unique environment of North Uist provides breeding sites for many now rare birds, such as the corncrake, dunlin, ringed plover. Golden and sea eagles soar above the moors and hillsides and merlin, buzzards, hen harriers and peregrine falcons can be spotted hunting.
Gaelic is spoken on the island and the main economy is based on lobster and crab fishing, salmon farming and crofting.
North Uist is not only a beautiful place to visit but has layers of fascinating history to uncover.
There is a thriving Art Centre and Museum at Taigh Chearsabhagh in Lochmaddy with a print workshop and darkroom facilities.
The nearby Lochmaddy Outdoor Centre offers many activities including sea kayaking, power boating, scuba diving and rock climbing/abseiling. In July there is a yearly studio trail, Art on the Map, which may take you further afield to Benbecula and South Uist. You may also find that you are taking home a piece of artwork.
Whether you come to relax with a stroll along a beach or to explore the moors you will have a choice in the evening of either preparing a meal of local produce in the cosy kitchen or of dinning out.
