Introduction
Executive Summary
Business Description
NAS Polymers was established in 2009 for the purpose to manufacture Polymer Concrete Manhole Covers and Frames for the South African and Sub Saharan Africa Market. NAS Polymers is a Close Corporation Registered in South Africa “Reg no: 2009/207244/23. Our vision is to become the leading Manufacturer of Polymer Concrete Manhole Covers in South Africa and Sub Saharan Africa. Our mission is to:
• Empower the communities by job creation
• Create prosperity for my partners and shareholders
• To create a spirit of Ubuntu
The manhole cover and frame industry are still been dominated by “cast iron†manufacturers. This has been beneficial to the consumers as cast iron can last a lifetime. However, there has always been the problem of theft as cast iron has recycle value. Unfortunately, it has presented the Councils and Municipalities with certain problems, namely:
 the cost of replacing stolen covers
 claims from the general public caused by personal injury or property damage resulting from open manholes
 And injury to workers caused by the weight of cast iron covers and frames.
A solution to the theft problem is Polymer, which is a mixture of Resin, Sand and Fibres. This material it light weight and has no resale value which minimizes theft.
We at NAS Polymers have done extensive tests on Polymer Concrete and have come up with a formula to ensure our products are durable and strong.
 The dimensions of our products are as specified by the SABS.
 Covers can be colour coded to suite the customers needs.
 Descriptive names or numbers can be cast on the covers.
 Replacement covers for cast iron frames can be manufactured; the suitability is dependent on manufacturing the replacement cover to the correct size. Due to the nature of cast iron, not all frames are exactly the same size. It is therefore, important that we receive a sample of the frame into which the replacement cover must go to ensure that the replacement cover fits correctly.
We are a black empowerment company and it is our aim to provide high quality manhole covers and frames at affordable prices. We endeavour to give the best service and attention to our customers at all times.
BENEFITS OF POLYMER CONCRETE
POLYMER CONCRETE is a combination of Polyester Resin, combined with Silica Sand and reinforced with fibreglass strands. This combination is mixed, moulded and cured resulting in a strong and durable material.
This product has been used successfully in various other applications. NAS Polymers has done extensive research in perfecting the formula to ensure the success of it’s’ use in the production of Manhole Covers and Frames.
Strength in tension, compression and flexibility are ± 3 – 5 times higher in products made from polymer than in similar products made from conventional concrete.
In the production of Manhole Covers and Frames, tests have shown that:
 Polymer is more resistant to corrosion than cast iron.
 The strength of Polymer concrete is unaffected by exposure to oil, diesel or petrol.
 Polymer concrete displays low water absorption.
Advantages are as follows:
 Due to the fact that there is NO SCRAP VALUE to polymer (it cannot be recycled) theft is minimized.
 Damage claims resulting from the theft of manhole covers is reduced.
 Polymer is by far easier to handle than cast iron. Therefore injuries caused to workers are minimized.
 Polymer concrete can be pigmented in various colours to suite customer needs.
 Polymer concrete is lighter in weight than cast iron. This reduces the cost of transport.
 Company names or order numbers can be moulded into the cover.
Disadvantages are few:
 Exposure to high concentrations of acids or alkalis on a regular basis, can compromise the strength of polymer.
 Polymer concrete products are not suitable where CONTINUOUS immersion is a requirement
