Introduction
In the early 60s, Joe Wong signed a business opportunity to open an unlicensed restaurant in Churchgate above two retail shops. Seven years later he acquired the present premises at Bedford Square and obtained a licence for the Hong Kong Fountain Restaurant. With 100 covers; a raised platform with an electronic organ for dancing; crescent shaped seating in the alcoves with circular tables; excellent cuisine and service; Hong Kong Fountain was the most popular night spot in the town.
When Joe retired the lease passed to the Chan brothers, assuming the eponymous title, Mr Chan's Restaurant. Eventually the lease passed to big brother Ming and his wife Irene, who are the restaurant's current owners.
Customers have tried and tested both supermarket products and other retail food outlets: they have returned to Mr Chan's! Although the menu includes many popular dishes familiar in British Chinese restaurants, the emphasis is on the cuisine of Canton and Sichuan.
Many Chinese families and Chinese students at Loughborough University visit the restaurant. For the latter group, Mr Chan has created a range of thirty dishes to mimic the food cooked by their mothers at home. This has become so popular that it has now been incorporated into the main menu. Rigorous attention to the health, safety and hygiene has resulted in the award of certificates (cum laude) following sharp inspections and we are proud to display our achievement on reaching the highest level in the scores on the door scheme. We are also compliant with staff training and education on health, safety and food preparation hygiene.
With a current seating capacity at 120 covers, we cater for corporate meals, award ceremonies, wedding receptions, graduation and birthday parties, Valentines Day, special Sunday buffets for mother's and father's day and of course, the Christmas season with a special menu available throughout December.
Finally, mention should be made for Mr Chan's hobby, breeding cold water fish. Children are always fascinated by the fish and enjoy counting them, their time away from the dining table is a delight to parents who can enjoy quality time and enjoy our cuisine
