Molyvos is the closest you can get to Greece in New York City.
Critics agree: Molyvos, at 871 Seventh Avenue in New York, (212) 582-7500, one block south of Carnegie Hall, serves perhaps the finest example of Greek cuisine in New York, and beyond. The New York Times awarded Molyvos three stars shortly after opening in May of 1997. Esquire's restaurant reviewer John Mariani named Molyvos among the "Best in America" that same year. Continuing on its path of excellence, New York magazine named Molyvos to its New York restaurant list for the "Best of 1999," and Time Out New York featured this outstanding Greek restaurant in its list of "NY's Top 100" for 2000.
Today, Molyvos is pleasing more patrons than ever. People from around the world have discovered that Molyvos serves the true foods and wines of Greece, along with a large dose of the country's warm and lively spirit. A visit to Molyvos is like a visit to Greece, only closer. Around the corner from Carnegie Hall and City Center, and only a short cab ride away form Madison Square Garden, Molyvos is the perfect spot for theatre-goers and leisurely diners alike.
Molyvos' menu is built upon the home-style cooking of Greece, with dishes elevated through the talents and professional expertise of executive chef James Botsacos. He prepares each of the authentic recipes using classical cooking techniques, and the superior ingredients available to him in New York, such as prime meats, greenmarket vegetables, and day boat fish, and then seasons the food with flavorful stocks and fresh herbs. You can see the quality difference in the taste and beautiful presentation of Molyvos' classics such as grilled baby octopus, Cretan bread salad, stifado, lamb yuvetsi, and the best baklava in New York.
The wine list, under the keen direction of Kamal Kouiri, is unique for its depth and breadth of excellent Greek labels, and small producers from the Mediterranean whose wines deserve to be enjoyed. The bar features a list of mezes, small plates of food, designed to be paired with more than a dozen ouzos, or a choice of several satisfying Greek wines or beers.
