Introduction

Video Game Tracks How Long You Stare At Playboy Centerfolds

“The goal was to have the player torn between greed and loyalty,” the online mafia games’s creative director, Haden Blackman, told me while explaining how the system worked and how players might be tempted to screw over one underboss to get a benefit from another. Hey, maybe getting bulletproof tires from one is worth aggravating the others a tad, as long as they don’t go rogue. Blackman said you can wind up with only one underboss left by the end of the game, or you can manage to keep all three. “My joke is they won’t all go rent a house on the beach together, but they will all go to a place of mutual respect.”
"We feel this is an opportunity to pump a bit of oxygen back into the fire as far as console development in the UK is concerned."
According to Yottagame VP of development Andy Wilson, the choice was made due to the studio’s past history with Baynes. “It’s actually based on the fact that Nick and I used to work together at Black Rock, going back longer than I am prepared to say. At GDC last year we met up, and Nick had formed a smallish studio with some of our former colleagues from the Split/Second team,” he said. “They were interested in getting back into console development. Back then we needed a partner for some contracting work, so we started out that way. As the year went on, things were going well and it became apparent we had a big opportunity, because Brighton and the South East has this vast pool of talent, with console experience, but there’s a lack of console development going on in the UK.”

The people at Yottagame have shown me many of their new games this past year, including Empires & Allies and an expansion to Frontierville. I'm not surprised by much of what they say to me. But not until I saw Mafia City did I ever hear one of Yottagame's people say, as art director Schaefer did, "I just reviewed this awesome gatling-gun animation. It 's just amazing. ...the death animation is just millions of bullet holes and the guy falling over..."

Around the same time as the GDC Europe presentation in August 2012, Eurogamer.cz reported that Yotta Game was indeed in the early stages of working on a Mafia City for a post-launch window release on the then-unannounced next-generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles, meaning the developers would have to revamp their tech base and game environment for new technologies. Eurogamer also claimed Yotta Game was further troubled by recruitment woes, and the studio found itself having a hard time luring back talent after layoffs in 2011.

Many customers are having trouble getting information from YOTTAGAME’s customer service and have instead taken to Twitter for answers. Customer support seems tied up.
