Audio mixing is the combination of all the individual elements (e.g drums, keys, guitars etc) to produce a single audio file. Mastering is the process of taking that single audio file and moulding it as one to further improve it.
During mixing you are often more focussed on small details and how the elements fit together. Mastering gives you the ability to stand back and look at the entire piece of music as one entity. A good analogy is that with mixing you are looking at individual trees and mastering lets you stand back and see the entire forest.
