Introduction
The Royal Borough of Greenwich occupies a portion of southeast London. The borough is world famous as the traditional location of the Greenwich Prime Meridian (the Zero Meridian) established by Sir George Airy in 1851. The borough takes its name from the historic town of Greenwich. Recently, the borough was listed as one of the top ten global destinations to visit – the only UK destination to make the list. Greenwich gained its Royal Borough Status in 2012 in order to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The borough has had historic links with the Royal Family for centuries. Many of the sites around Greenwich are listed as World Heritage by UNESCO.
