The Holiday Season Is Upon Us
This time of year represents a cheerful season and plenty of celebration. Although many do not give possible danger during the holidays a second thought, we want to share with you some startling statistics that will help you become more aware of the potential dangers associated with the holiday season.

    Holiday Toys
When it comes to the holidays, children take front and center with wish lists for Christmas. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports over 174,000 toy-related ER-treated injuries and the deaths of seven children under the age of 15 occurred in 2016. Unfortunately, toys with moveable or small parts can present a choking hazard to the little ones. Even the wrapping or packaging materials can be a danger to your child. It is imperative that preventative measures are taken to ensure that potentially harmful toys and products are not bought for your kids or family members.

    Shoveling Snow
For those who receive significant snowfall during the winter months, shoveling snow a risk for many, especially males. According to Harvard Health, on average 100 men die as a result of cardiac arrest, with many more seeking emergency care for chest pain and other health issues related to shoveling snow. Research has shown that the deeper than snow, thehigher the risk.
    Falls and Burn Hazards

Falls and burns are other common holiday injuries that may require emergency treatment. Attempting to hang up holiday decorations accounts for over 10,000 fall injuries every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). During the holiday season one must be aware of the potential for burns, whether they result from decorations, candles or cooking a holiday feast. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports, “Thanksgiving is the leading day for home cooking fires, followed by Christmas Day and Christmas Eve, whereas, candle and decoration fires peak in December.”

    Road Trips
Come the holidays, come car accidents, unfortunately. The statistics of lives lost every holiday season should be a poignant reminder of the fragility of life. Over the last several years, the U.S. Department of Transportationstates, “an average of 300 deaths result from drunk driving accidents within the week between Christmas and New Year. In 2016, 781 fatalities from drunk-driving crashes were reported in the month of December.” With an increase of drivers on the road, poor weather conditions, distracted and intoxicated driving, one must be very cautious and take every measure to be vigilant while driving; especially during the holiday season.

One of the best preventative measures one can take toensure the possible ways so you or a loved one does not become part of the statistics this holiday season, is to take Heart Saver First Aid classes or CPR training in Los Angeles. Classes offered, range from first aid basics, medical, injury emergencies and CPR. It is the step in the right direction. Should Ribs Break During CPR?
CPR is a vital, life-saving procedure that everyone should be familiar with. However, being familiar with it does not mean not having questions. Perhaps one of the most common inquiries during CPR training in Los Angeles is: should ribs break during CPR?

You may have seen articles and memes being shared on social media that state that if CPR is being done correctly, ribs will be broken. However, this isn’t exactly true.

While it is possible to break bones during CPR, this does not need to occur for the procedure to work properly. In other words, do not listen for the cracking of bones to determine if you are doing a good job – this is a very important point. Instead, focus on a steady rhythm and the proper depth of compressions.

The ribs are connected to the sternum by costal cartilages. This makes the ribs slightly flexible, allowing them to expand and contract when breathing, and also allowing for CPR without needing to injure the bones in every case. It is important to know that this cartilage can make popping noises during CPR, which can be mistaken for the sound of broken bones.

Infants and children have more delicate bones, but they also have specialized CPR techniques that should be used on them, which you can learn through first aid training in Los Angeles. The elderly also tend to have bones that are weaker; however, standard adult CPR techniques should still be used as broken bones are a better outcome than what would result from not receiving CPR.

CPR AND FIRST AID TRAINING: WHY ME?
Among many other daily comforts—like water, food or sunny days in Los Angeles—it’s easy to take for granted what we have, including life itself. After watching hundreds of movies where there is always a hero around to save grandpa from choking to death with a steak or your 11-year-old cousin from drowning after a wave took him by surprise, we go around thinking life is so easy. But it’s not.

When accidents occur, fast action to save a beating heart is vital. Whether that means knowing how to compress the chest during CPR, immobilize a broken-bone injury or even responding to poisoning, acting quickly and smartly toward an emergency is what matters first. But how could you be the hero if you don’t even know what to do?

According to the American Heart Association, “nearly 383,000 out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests occur annually, and 88 percent of cardiac arrests occur at home.” If you compare those numbers to the fact that only “32 percent of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from a bystander,” it’s clear that there are more people waiting for Superman than actually doing something themselves.

If you are not the waiting kind, Life Saver Team is what you need. It takes only 2 hours of your time to learn how to respond to emergencies and be there for your loved ones for a lifetime.

So take a step into action and gain a life skill everyone should have! When you attend CPR classes in Los Angeles, you can expect to learn everything from what “CPR” stands for (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to how many cycles of CPR to complete within a given time. For those who have a basic grasp of CPR already, or those brand new to the technique, here’s what 2 minutes of proper CPR should look like.

CPR is made up of cycles consisting of chest compressions and rescue breathing that ought to be administered with a ratio of 30 chest compressions for every 2 rescue breaths. When the word “cycle” is used in CPR, it refers to one completed round of 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths. CPR classes in Los Angeles can teach you how to give proper rescue breaths.
