Introduction
What is cured rosin?
So the new kid on the block is Rosin - concentrates that are a hot topic in vaping….if you are familiar with Resin concentrates, you will definitely want to inform yourself with the up and coming Rosin concentrate that is now becoming available in the market for your vaping pleasure.
So, what is cured rosin and how does it compare to live resin?
Generally, Resin products are also categorized as being “live†vs. “cured.†Live means that the flowers or trim being used are processed fresh or fresh-frozen directly after harvest. Cured means that they have been dried and cured after harvest before being extracted. Curing rosin involves subjecting rosin to various temperatures within a sealed glass jar over time.
The specific way in which rosin is cured has an impact on the flavor, potency, and consistency of the final product. It's generally recommended to leave it in the fridge for a day or two to allow it to fully cure. You can also put your Rosin in the freezer. It generally takes less time to cure this way, although using extra-cold temperatures isn't always ideal.
Cured resin is made with cultivar-specific, activated distillate and terpenes extracted from high quality, cured flower using CO2 as a solvent. Most vape formulas are made with a blend of trim or other plant byproducts. Using flower provides the fullest spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes.
First, the cured flower is extracted on a low temperature/high pressure setting to preserve and capture the terpenes. Then the same batch of flower is decarboxylated and it’s extracted again on supercritical settings to collect the cannabinoids. The decarboxylation process activates the cannabinoids, converting them from their acidic forms to their neutral counterparts, for instance THCa to Delta9-THC.
Both the terpene and cannabinoid extracts are put through numerous refinement procedures (winterization, roto-evaporation, carbon filter polishing and short path distillation) to purify and
concentrate. The refined extracts are then combined back together in a consistent ratio for maximum effect and flavor.
Fun Fact: Due to all of the extraction and refinement steps necessary to produce this potent and flavorful formula, a massive amount of flower are required to create it. On average, over 10 grams of high-quality flower are required to create a single 1 gram cartridge! From an in market cost perspective ten grams of flower typically costs over $125. At around $90 at your favorite weed store, the 1 gram Cured Resin cartridge becomes a great value.
How long you leave your rosin to sit is up to you. Typically a few weeks is seen as sufficient, but cold curing can take longer than hot, so bear that in mind. Ultimately, it’s unsure exactly what is happening with this process, but the results can be breathtaking, and that’s driving huge interest in cured solventless rosin.
