Introduction
Jonathan Livingstone MA, author of The Therapist Within You (Lemniscate, 2009) and Revisionist Psychotherapy (in preparation), has been a pioneer in the field of therapy and coaching since establishing his practice in London in 1998. Determined to provide the most effective service available, he studied and trained in a number of what are considered the most effective contemporary therapy and coaching models (becoming trainer in some), and tested them in clinical practice to find out what worked best and why. From his research and practice he has created a coherent and credible way of working, called Revisionist Psychotherapy, very effective in online and telephone work, which consistently achieves the desired outcomes.
Approach
Jonathan’s unique approach is summarized in these ten points:
(1) We identify and explore the problem and goal – which are interrelated, since without a goal there’s no problem, and you can’t have a problem if there isn’t something you want.
(2)A therapeutic problem is doing something you don’t want to do, not doing something you want to do, or feeling bad. A problem is something in you that is stopping you from achieving your goal.
(3) It’s feelings, not thoughts, that make you behave in a way you don’t like – if it was just thoughts you could change them, since – if anything – you are in control of your thoughts.
(4) If the feelings are out of proportion to the present circumstances or out of place, they come from somewhere else, something in your past, unconsciously triggering the same feelings in the present.
(5) The uncomfortable feelings in the present are created by a difficult experience in the past, which you didn’t handle successfully at the time, and left you with a negative belief and a bad feeling.
(6) We carefully identify the feelings and, where possible, the unconscious limiting and unhelpful belief behind the problem.
(7) The feelings enables us to identify and return to the experience in the past which is creating the problem in the present.
(8) We examine the past experience, discovering making explicit and conscious the negative learnings.
(9) Through a process called revisioning, we help you to renegotiate this past experience in such a way that you feel empowered and create a positive belief to replace the unhelpful belief and bad feeling.
(10) When we return to the present, the bad feeling is no longer there, and you won’t be able to get it back even if you try – demonstrating that the problem has now been healed.
