Introduction
Situated in the heart of Sydney’s CBD J. H. Cutler, Australia’s finest bespoke tailor, has provided bespoke tailoring and shirt making services to discerning gentlemen throughout Australia and across the world for the last 129 years.
Throughout this time leading identities from Federal and State politics, country families, business, the law, medicine, diplomacy and entertainment have enjoyed the benefits of skills based on the great traditions of England’s Savile Row, the home of bespoke tailoring since the 18th century.
The business was founded in 1884 when Joseph Handel Cutler first opened a shop at 70 King Street, Sydney. Today John Handel Lawson Cutler, the fourth generation of the Cutler family to run the business, assiduously maintains the exacting standards, the quality, the cut, the style and the fit that has made their name synonymous with exclusive clothing.
J. H. Cutler offers clients a comprehensive range of products and services including bespoke tailoring of suits for business or formal wear and jackets, blazers and trousers for casual wear, bespoke shirts for business, formal, casual and sporting wear and overcoats.
Also offered is an extensive range of top quality gentlemen’s fashion accessories personally selected by John Cutler. These include Stefano Ricci Italian silk ties, hand made Italian leather belts, socks, cashmere scarves, cufflinks and braces.
J. H. Cutler also offers hand made shoes imported exclusively from Stefano Bemer in Florence.
Fabrics are primarily sourced from leading merchants in Britain and Italy such as Loro Piana, Ermenegildo Zegna, Dormeuil, Scabal and Holland & Sherry. They include many woven using Australian Merino wool, vicuna probably the world’s most expensive fabric, cashmere, cottons, linens and silks.
At J. H. Cutler every item of bespoke clothing is made to each client’s exact measurements. Individual physical characteristics are taken into account and personal consultation plays a pivotal role in the process. No other method produces a better garment for fit, styling, quality and durability.
Trained in London at the renowned Tailor and Cutter Academy John’s skills as a designer and cutter have been honed over more than 49 years in the business. His close colleague Sam Hazelton and a team of skilled craftsmen supports him.
Their unique combination of skills have been recognised internationally with J. H. Cutler regularly being included in exclusive lists of the world’s best tailors.

Meet Our Team (1)
John Cutler
Designer, cutter and Business Principal
Born in 1949 and christened John Handel Lawson Cutler, I am the fourth generation of my family to take up the tailor’s shears. I joined the family business straight from school at 16 years of age. Even before then I had always shown a very keen interest in bespoke tailoring and shirt making. During my holidays from Sydney Grammar, I would visit my father’s shop to learn about tailoring, and even made the occasional waistcoat for members of staff at my school.
In 1967 at the age of 18 I followed in the footsteps of my grandfather and father before me, and travelled to London, the home of bespoke tailoring. At that time it was also “Swinging London†was the epicentre of the music, style and fashion world. Living in Swiss Cottage and working at one of the world’s foremost woollen houses Dormeuil Freres, I got to know many of the leading tailors in Savile Row. I also attended the renowned Tailor and Cutter Academy in Soho’s Gerrard Street where I studied ‘cutting gentlemen’s tailor made garments’, before graduating in 1969. The Academy, which sadly no longer exists, was for many years the cornerstone of British institutional tailoring.
I returned to Sydney to work with my father Bruce in the family business before taking over the cutting in 1972, and as Managing Director in 1976. To this day I remain designer, cutter, and Business Principal, and now have almost 50 years of experience in the business.
I believe that bespoke tailoring is the only service that offers a gentleman flexibility and impeccable quality when it comes to choosing a suit. Bespoke tailoring gives you the ultimate choice plus the quality, the cut, the style and the fit that only comes with bespoke clothing
My tailoring style is based on the great traditions of Savile Row, and whilst we may be a dying breed, we bespoke tailors are passionate about our craft and are forever inspired to create personalised outfits of the highest quality.
I have been dressing discerning gentlemen from around Australia and across the world for almost 50 years, and assiduously maintain the exacting standards, the quality, the cut, the style and the fit that has made the Cutler name synonymous with exclusive clothing for almost 130 years.
