Introduction
Columbus is generally believed to be the son of Domenico Colombo who worked in Genoa as a wool worker and merchant. Columbus’ mother is thought to be Susanna Fontanarossa, the wife of Colombo. Christopher Columbus encountered the Americas on August 3, 1492, continents that were totally unknown in Europe, Asia and Africa and outside the Old World. His goal was to sail west until he reached Asia (India) where the wealth of gold, pearls, and spice was awaiting him. The hot trade winds from the south frequently referred to as "easterlies," pushed Columbus ' fleet from the Canary Islands to the Bahamas for five weeks during his first trip in 1492. San Salvador Island was the accurate first land sighting and landing points.
