Modern rinks have a specialized procedure for preparing the surface. Generally, this procedure includes cold pipes, wherein a thin layer of water is sprayed on the sand or concrete to level and seal it. The layer is painted white for better contrast; then necessary marking are also placed, along with logos or other decorations. Later, another thin layer of h2O is sprayed on top of this. The ice is built up to a thickness of an inch (2-3 centimeters) by continuous flow of water onto the surface.
