Introduction
The area surrounding Henry's Hi-Life is historically the only intact example of a neighborhood of "working men" and their families who immigrated to San Jose from Europe during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It also represents one of the largest concentrations of Italian immigrants in California from 1900 to 1925. The district contains examples of several styles of residential and commercial architecture constructed during that time period, including Italianate, Queen Anne Victorian, Gable Front and Folk Vernacular residential styles and Italianate and Board Front commercial styles. The building that once housed the Torino Hotel, built in 1900 is now home of Henry's World Famous Hi-Life Restaurant. The restaurant was established in 1960 at a different location, but because of the construction of I-280, was moved to the Guadalupe river gardens a few years later. Henry's World Famous Hi-Life has been in business for over fourty-four years.
The old hotel structure has not changed much from its original state in the 1900's, but don't let the rustic looking building fool you. You are likely to bump into the Mayor or some of your favorite local sports heroes while you enjoy your meal or just a cool drink. If you're new to the place, you'll need to grab a number from the wall at the rear of the bar when you walk in. The host will take your order by the numbers, and you'll be seated as soon as your meal is ready. Located a short block from the HP Pavillion, Henry's really shines when the Sharks are in town, but this is a place for any sports season. During football season, we open at 8:30am to serve steak and eggs and many other hearty breakfast plates. If you are a barbecue fan, you're going to love the place. The barbecued chicken is juicy and moist and the boneless teriyaki chicken breast is just as wonderful. Whether you prefer 1/2 rack or full, the baby back and spare ribs are very popular. For maximum beef, go for the 24-ounce porterhouse or, for a lighter choice, the 12-ounce USDA-choice New York steak definitely fills the bill. All of our dinners come with salad, a buttery baked potato and garlic bread. The full bar is well stocked with 15 of your favorite beers on tap (even root beer for the kids) and plenty of alcohol for cocktails or shots
