Functional Safety

To improve plant process safety, functional safety systems enable the orderly shutdown of processing units when abnormal situations occur that are beyond the capabilities of the regulatory control system or operators to correct or to prevent a catastrophe. Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) are designed and used to prevent or mitigate hazardous events to protect people or the environment or prevent damage to process equipment.
‘Functional Safety Assessment (FSA)’ is carried out to ensure that the SIS continues to provide the correct level of risk reduction via appropriate maintenance, operation and modification controls, including procedures and safe systems of work.
Safety Integrity Level (SIL) is a measurement of performance required for a Safety Instrumented Function (SIF). As per IEC 61508, four (4) SIL levels ranging from SIL 1 to SIL 4 are defined to assess the criticality of SIF where SIL 1 is the least and SIL 4 is the most dependable.
Functional Safety Assessment consists of SIL Classification, Safety Requirement Specification (SRS) development, SIL Verification and SIL Validation.
