Biography:
Susan R. Franklin has been practicing law for over 32 years and brings a wealth of expertise to the negotiating table as well as to court. Ms. Franklin is trained in the Directive, Facilitative and Transformative Mediation frameworks. Ms. Franklin is a mediator with extensive credentials. She received her certification as a Mediator from Cornell University, Alliance for Education in Dispute Resolution, New York, and is a graduate of Duke University, Private Adjudication Center, North Carolina. Ms. Franklin is certified by the North Carolina Superior Court, Dispute Resolution Commission to mediate Superior Court cases, and Equitable Distribution of Marital Property matters. She also trained at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Mediation Center in Applications in Organizational Mediation and earned certification in Equitable Dispute Resolution Training at the Erickson Mediation Institute in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Ms. Franklin earned her credentials as an arbitrator from the Better Business Bureau, Washington, D.C.. She is a Certified Family Financial Mediator by the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Committee.
Since 1997, Ms Franklin has focused her practice on Family Law, working with clients to resolve conflict through Mediation, Collaborative Law, and Litigation. Prior to that, Ms. Franklin focused her practice on litigating employment, labor, contract and property disputes. She has presented lectures on Mediation for the North Carolina State Bar Association and was a faculty participant in 1999, 2000 and 2004 Mediation Forums at the University Of North Carolina Law School. She spent 17 years litigating contract actions before the Illinois State and United States Northern District Courts. She taught Business Law at MacCormac Jr. College from 1979-1981 and was a seminar faculty member for Illinois Continuing Legal Education in 1986.
Ms. Franklin is a member of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers, North Carolina Bar Association and the American Bar Association.
Ms. Franklin has been involved in the Chapel Hill Community serving on the Board of Adjustment in the Town of Chapel Hill as both a member and chair. She served, on the Transportation Board for 7 years and was a mayoral candidate for the Town of Chapel Hill in 1999.
