Introduction
High Security locks are more secure than standard ones, because they have complex internal locking mechanisms. They cannot be picked, and most cannot even be drilled open. But because they are more complicated internally, and usually larger in size, they can be a nuisance to service. Failure is also more likely with these locks than with the simpler systems. High Security Locks are those that have been engineered so as to resist forced entry by burglars and intruders. High Security is a term applied to locks manufactured using a number of specific engineering techniques that make them difficult (though not impossible) to pick or drill open without destroying the lock itself. These include sophisticated mechanisms for locking and unlocking, alongside an increased use of special materials such as hardened steel and ceramics which cannot easily be drilled through. We will look at each individually. The vast majority of standard padlocks designs have locking mechanisms that are made of cast or stamped steel. The internal components of the lock are layer after layer of exposed, shavings-prone metal. However, High Security padlocks almost always employ concealed locking mechanisms made from hardened steel. This metal has been through an extra manufacturing process to make it stronger and more resistant to cutting than standard locks. These metal parts inside the lock will be welded together, rather than merely fixed with rivets as is commonly found with standard locks. A ceramic cylinder plug on top of the key in a High Security lock is made from a high tech material that is extremely hard and difficult to cut. A standard padlock only has one locking mechanism, which requires just one lock pin to be raised before the shackle can be turned. Standard padlocks are unable to resist picking attempts because they have no secondary security feature so these high security locks were introduced.
