Introduction

Emile's is a second generation, family owned Italian-American Restaurant with a tradition of pride, great cooking and serving the public. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. Emile's Restaurant is the realization of a life-time dream of Emile Jaynes.

Emile was born and raised in Belgium during World War II. "My father's family was very well to do in Belgium before the war," says Bob Jaynes who now manages the restaurant. They owned resort hotels and restaurants, much like Miami Beach, and owned a large hotel in downtown Brussels. They had a brewery, a large tavern, and even a vaudeville theater. Had World War II not broken out, I'm sure my father would have inherited the thriving family business, but it just wasn't meant to be." By the time the war ended in 1944, all the family businesses were in ruin. Emile's father who had spent 18 months in the notorious Stalag 17, had died in 1943. Emile went to work for the US Army occupation troops as a cook and chauffeur. His mother, Floc, met and fell in love with an American soldier and interpreter, Raymond Jaynes . Before Raymond left Brussels, the two were engaged, and they were married by phone when he was discharged from the army. The groom was in Washington D.C. and the bride was in Brussels, Belgium. On January 4, 1948, Floc and Emile arrived in America, the land of opportunity, hopeful of a new and better life.

Within a year of his wife's arrival, Raymond and Floc opened a restaurant of their own. The restaurant was a dream-come-true for Floc, who had been forced to leave her beloved homeland with only $150 between her and her son. The restaurant was called Colonial on Seneca, located on East Lake Road in Geneva and a twin to the famous Rose Hill Mansion. The beautiful 100-year-old Colonial style mansion-turned-restaurant with four white pillars on the front porch completely surrounded by trees overlooking Seneca Lake, was a well-known spot for parties, luncheons and weddings. The Jaynes family was excited by the restaurants success and was looking forward to a life of prosperity. Then on the eve of the restaurant's first anniversary, the landmark restaurant caught fire and burned to the ground. Emile was just 20 when it happened, and it's a day he will never forget. Jaynes' parents, who lost everything in the fire, took jobs soon after in New York City, working as a maid and a butler. Emile, who had also been working at Club 86 at the time of the fire, was engaged to be married to a young woman he had met, so he stayed in Geneva and married, with his dream to own a restaurant of his own.

The Colonial burned on June 13th, and on July 9th Emile married "Peppy." Together they raised a family of two daughters and one son. He continued to work in food service at the Hotel Seneca in Geneva, the Geneva Country Club, and Belhurst Castle. He saved all he could until he finally managed to make his dream come true.

In 1979, Emile and Peppy bought their own restaurant, the former Charco-Pit. The building was originally a barn, then a local bar called The Click. It became a family-run restaurant. If you were family, you worked the restaurant. If you worked at the restaurant, you were family. They changed the name to Emile's when they did away with the charcoal pit and added on a large dining room to the left rear of the building. The restaurant now seats 230 people. Emile was a great chef and a great businessman. He respected people and in turn he was respected and held in the highest regard. He was genuine, gentle and gracious. He noticed people and made everyone feel important and welcomed. Emile passed away at the age of 73. He left behind the business, a lot of love and a legacy and pride that his family continues to honor and support.

Emile's children, have been a part of the business from the start and manage it today. You will never walk into the restaurant without finding someone from the family there. Son, Bob, cooks and runs the restaurant. Daughter Beverly keeps the books and her sister Lorraine is a waitress.

In 1990 The Jaynes family purchased a house neighboring the restaurant and renovated it to house Peppy's Ice Cream. Since the restaurant was named for their father, they named the ice cream stand for their mother.

We hope you will visit Emile's. Start your dinner off with the fabulous salad bar, which is a feast in itself. Follow it with one of our very generous portioned entrees. Whether your selection is with one of our homemade sauces, or an entree of fresh scallops, haddock or shrimp, or a cut of the best prime rib in the area (tender and full of flavor - appropriately names after Emile), or any one of our many entrees, you're sure to find a dinner that you'll enjoy. We also have daily specials, vegetarian entrees, and child portions in most entrees. If you are looking for thick luscious lamb chops, or you're craving lobster or king crab, we have that too. To satisfy that sweet tooth, try one of our homemade desserts, or ice cream from Peppy's next door. We take great pride in our Dad's name and reputation and we are thankful to our loyal clientele. If you've never dined with us, we welcome you. We hope you'll walk in as a customer and walk out a friend.
