Excellent, cheap, authentic tacos. The roadside shack is easy to pass up, but if you do step inside you're treated to freshly made tortillas, tender meats, and flavorful sauces. The breakfast tacos are some of the best in town, with eggs cooked in a ski.

The aroma of smoky morita salsa and roasting meats from the open kitchen permeate the small dining room. Orange walls and folk art evoke an Old-Mexico feeling. With only counter service, El Meson employs a welcoming, but fend-for-yourself mentality. The menu offers traditional Mexican dishes, including tender chicken in pipian, a mole sauce with a pumpkin seed base. The cochinita pibil--achiote-marinated pork tenderloin is garnished with tangy, marinated red onions.

Start your morning with huevos rancheros or $1 breakfast tacos. The drive-thru (open during normal business hours) offers fast, convenient service for those on the run.

While the Southeast Austin taqueria specializes in counter-service snacks, its full-service South Lamar sib is set in a beautifully refurbished space offering a diverse menu of fresh, affordable interior Mexican fare, including regional specialties (cochinita pibil, Acapulco-style shrimp cocktail) and family recipes; the big dining room with open kitchen is bright and welcoming, and the bar serves a wide variety of tequilas with small plates to match.
